Tangled Yarns Classes and Workshops

Bookings are essential for all of our classes. You can phone the store on 07 3666 0276 or Contact Us to enquire about or book into any of our classes. We keep our classes numbers small and we call our instructor in (if we have no students, we have no instructor!).

We have a range of classes aimed at both the beginner and intermediate crafters.

Our Learn To range is aimed at those who have never knitted or crocheted before, or are looking for a refresher if you learnt as a child.

Our Technical Support class moves beyond the basics, giving assistance with current projects or wanting to master a new technique.

Our Advanced Beginner classes are aimed at students who want to push beyond those simple projects and would like to learn a new technique. Prior knowledge on how to comfortably knit, purl, cast on, cast off, increase and decrease are required These classes do not teach students how to knit.

Our Intermediate classes are aimed at students who have a firm grasp on their skills and will have a few different techniques within the class. Each class will have specific prior knowledge requirements.

All of our classes are $25.00 per two hour lesson. We do hold other speciality workshops which will have their own pricing.

We do ask for a non refundable deposit of $25 to secure your place in the course (which is payment of your first lesson) with the remainder to be paid on the night.

We will confirm your attendance via text message or email the day before the lesson. During the course, if you are unable to attend a lesson we do need a minimum of 24 hours notice so we can notify our instructor. This way, we can move your payment to another lesson. If we have less than 24 hours notice that payment is unfortunately forfeited.

Beginner Classes

Learn to Knit

During the Learn to Knit course, you will learn how to cast on, knit, purl and cast off. Further techniques are increasing and decreasing. If you have a 4mm or 5mm set of knitting needles you are welcome to bring them along, we just ask that you purchase your yarn from our store. This is a series of three classes run over three consecutive weeks.

Learn to Crochet

During the Learn to Crochet course, you learn how to chain, double crochet, treble crochet, finish off, increase, decrease and reading a simple pattern. If you have a 4mm or 5mm crochet hook you are welcome to bring that along, we just ask that you purchase your yarn from our store. This is a series of three classes run over three consecutive weeks.

Advanced Beginner Classes

Technical Support

This is a student driven class where you will receive support in reading a pattern, creating cables or lace, working in the round - whatever is stumping you! Bring along your current project and our instructors will be quite happy to help you work through any concerns or queries you might have about knitting and crocheting. This is a one off class, i.e., you don't need to book into a series of classes.

Cast on/off Techniques

This class is aimed at knitters who want to go beyond the basics, or would like to expand their knowledge past the one or two cast on/off techniques they know. Different techniques will yield different results, and this class will show you a few of the most used methods and the reasons why we use them.

Please bring 4mm knitting needles, 4mm crochet hook and a smooth yarn as you will be using this yarn for the different techniques.

Reading Japanese Symbols

When looking through crochet patterns, you may have found that some patterns use symbols and charts to display the pattern instead of being written out. The Japanese use this method for the majority of their patterns, but it is an international method. This class will show you how to decipher these charts and show you how easy it is to follow this format.

Please bring a 4mm crochet hook and a smooth yarn to work with.

Learn to Lace

Learn to Lace is a two lesson series which will find you creating a sample piece of lace in the first lesson, forming the foundation of the different stitches used in lace knitting. The second lesson will focus on any problems you’ve had over the week with your homework, and beginning your first shawl.

Materials required for this course will be advised of at a later date.

Please note, Learn to Lace is $60 which covers both weeks, not including materials.

Intermediate Classes

Continental Knitting

Our Continental Knitting classes are aimed at students who already know how to knit "English" i.e., with yarn held in the right hand and want to learn how to knit Continental Style (with yarn in left hand). Some people find that with practise, this speeds up their knitting time greatly, especially during long stretches of stockinette stitch or ribbing.

Prior knowlege of knowing how to knit and purl, increase and decrease comfortably required. During the class, you will learn one method of knit stitch, two different methods of purl stitch and how to switch between the two during ribbing. This is a series of two classes run over two consecutive weeks.

Learn to Knit Socks

In our Learn to Knit Socks class, you will learn how to knit a pair of ribbed socks. The first week will cover cast on and cuff, the second heel construction and the third will focus on toe construction. This class does require homework during the week so you can be at the correct stage for the next lesson.

Prior knowledge of knowing how to knit in the round comfortably required. 2.5mm or 2.75mm needles in your preferred method of knitting in the round (double pointed needles, Magic Loop, Two Circulars) are recommended, plus at least 100g of 4ply/sock yarn. We recommend the Biggan Design 4ply. We do ask that you purchase the yarn from our store. This is a series of three classes run over three consecutive weeks.
